Comcast is HORRIBLE--how/why were they enabled a monopoly - Internet, phone, TV, home security


Comcast may be the most loathsome company I have ever engaged with. They are truly nightmare. I am constantly disappointed with their shoddy, over-priced products and even more disturbed by their horrendous customer support. The following are just a few examples Comcast's bungling incompetence and startling deficiencies:

1) Their internet speed is typically much LOWER than advertised. I am paying for 105 Mbps and routinely average ~ 25Mbps when sitting 2 or 3 unobstructed feet from the router/modem.

2) On several occasions my monthly bill has unexpectedly increased without me requesting any additional features or "services" (and without any of the "special" deals elapsing. Most recently Showtime appeared on my bill for an additional $10 without our approval. Where I am from this is called stealing. I wonder how common this is and whether or not it is actionable.

3) The home security system is pathetic. It is twice as expensive as other options and, as it turns out, not even half as good. I wish my partner would have researched the options a little more thoroughly. The 3 year contract and "early termination fee" (which is nothing more than paying for the remainder of the over priced contract in full) ensures we will chained to Comcast for the next 2.5 years. This is typical of Comcast's approach to customers. Utilize small print, subject you to haphazard redirects and prolonged hold periods when engaging customer "service" and mobilizing collections as needed.

4) The intellectual capacity of the help staff is sub-standard. Their product knowledge, problem-solving skills, theoretical/procedural understanding of their companies deplorable policies, and general customer support are pathetic. Be prepared to spend hours on the phone on hold while periodically being re-routed/blocked by several bumbling people responsible for providing customer "support"

5) The introductory/bundle prices are reasonable but the actual costs after the initial promotional period are exorbitant and the price gouging that accompanies bundle breakage is severe. Be careful what you bundle with them. When I tried to trim my package and rid myself of their substandard "services" everything else increased significantly so that they would actually get more per moth to give me even less than I was already getting. For example, their crappy home security system is 29.95 per moth with their overpriced television package and 39.95 per month with out the package.

6) Unfortunately, Comcast has a monopoly on high speed internet in my area (given the Mpbs above it would be more accurate to say the highest speed internet in the area). This rankles me to no end. I intensely hope that another vendor is able to provide high speed internet to the area in the near future so that I can be free and clear of Comcast's shady dealings, price gouging, and disappointing product.
